Construction Product Alliance responds to Queensland bill for non-conforming products

The CPA has reviewed the Queensland Building and Construction Legislation (Non-Conforming Building Products and Other Matters) Amendment Bill 2017 and provided a written submission to the Public Works and Utilities Committee. The submission notes the CPA’s overall support for the Queensland government’s move to specifically address non-conforming products. However the submission also outlines the Alliance’s concerns that the Bill not create unnecessary red tape for building approvals and that it does not unduly overlap existing workplace health and safety laws.

Commonwealth Senate Inquiry into non-conforming building products

On 23 June 2015, the Senate Economics Committee announced an inquiry into non-conforming building products. The Committee was scheduled to report its findings on 30 September 2016, however the Federal election and dissolution of both Houses of Parliament means that the Inquiry has now been formally lapsed. An interim report was released in May and it is hoped that following the election, the Inquiry will be reconvened in some manner. Building Minister’s Forum acts on non-conforming products

On 31 July 2015, the Building Ministers’ Forum, chaired by the Hon. Karen Andrews, Assistant Minister for Science, and agreed to undertake several projects in relation to non-conforming building products. The Ministers agreed to report back on these projects within 6 months. Read more

On 19 February 2016, the BMF met to receive the findings from these projects and has now agreed to develop an implementation plan to move forward with the findings. Read more

The Senior Official Groups of the Building Ministers’ Forum has now released a report on their findings with a number of recommendations for next steps. The report has been released for public comment by 11 April 2016. Read more
